So What, If I'm a Google Cult Member!

Posted on Mar 23rd, 2006 by Tru : Visionaire Tru

Just poking your belly. I'm not a cult member of Google. Believe, you, me there are weirdos out there with blue, red, yellow and green tattooed skin. Not me! But if you really want to see the sneak in and catch the Google cult performing bizaare rituals and animal sacrifices look no further than here: shhhhhh, quietly peek in.

Seriously though, sometimes Google makes one feel as if their apart of some secret society, the way they do things. It gives me the wooleys sometimes. You'll see what I mean when I share this latest email, they sent me in my GMail, with you:

"Hi there,

Thanks for your interest in Google Page Creator.  We appreciate your patience, and we're excited to tell you that we enabled your account today, so you can start making pages now!  To get started, head over to
http://pages.google.com/ and sign in with your Gmail password.  We haven't opened up Google Page Creator to everybody yet, so you'll see a message on our home page saying that accounts are unavailable - you can just ignore that.

Google Page Creator is an experiment on Google Labs.  Google Labs is where we put projects before they're ready for prime time so that we can start getting feedback from our users.  So, please, tell us what you think, what features we should add, what problems you're experiencing, or anything else that can help us make Google Page Creator a better tool for you.  We're listening."
---Google Page Creator Team

Now you see what I'm talking about. But shhhhh! Don't tell anyone I told you about this. ;-) Hahaha!

Here's the 5th definition of “cult,” the 1st, 2nd & 3rd being religious & the 4th medical…

5 a : great devotion to a person, idea, object, movement, or work (as a film or book); especially : such devotion regarded as a literary or intellectual fad b : a usually small group of people characterized by such devotion

Very similar to “fan,” no?

Anyway, as a college librarian, I have no trouble admiting that I use Google more than any of the other search engines. The have a beta site called Google Scholar that will link to the holdings in our library (eventually).

In fact, I teach a class on using the web for scholarly research. Most of our students come from high schools where they did much of their online research using Google, and the scholarly database interfaces aren't as comfortable for them. After this class, though, they see that with so much questionable “research” on the web, they are better off at least verifying what they've found by using one of the subscription databases! Point of the class: Google is great for some things, but not for everything.

I know! I love to research stuff, but even more, I love being able to teach students how to find things out for themselves instead of just believing whatever they hear from someone else. An important key to independence.

@Heidi: I'm with you sister. The word “cult” has such a bad rap, kinda like “religion”. Some peeps could stand to embrace keen application. Plus, I think librarians are cool. :)

Oh and Heidi, you could be an online librarian devoted to college resources. If seriously interested in doing something like that, you can engage-n-create such a site in AU-City Pod.

@Diane: Thats something I can't stress enough. If only everyone would do that in regard to many things we take for granted, the whole world would be better for it. And I couldn't agree more that it is “an important key to independence”, like you said Diane.
